Girls scrimmage canceled for Thursday Sept. 1

Due to the damage done to the southern part of the state by Tropical Storm Irene, Woodstock will NOT be making the trip up to PA to scrimmage the girls on Thursday. The girls first and only scrimmage will be Saturday at the Essex Jamboree.

The day before Tropical Storm Irene slammed into the Green Mountains, the girls soccer team took full advantage of the calm before the storm by organizing a team hike up Mt. Elmore on Saturday. Great fun was had by all as you can see in the pictures. The girls host Woodstock on Thursday Sept. 1 for 4pm scrimmages.

A small-sided possession game

Thanks to Morrisville Soccer Club and PA Booster's Grand Pooba, Tom Stames, the boys soccer program kicked off pre-season under the lights at 12:01 am this morning. About 2/3 of the projected amount of boys showed up and coach Rogers ran them through some team building fitness drills and some small sided possession games...Pre-season starts for everyone else later today at more reasonable afternoon starting times...The boys will have three pre-season scrimmage opportunities this year. All three will be home or close to home. They start at the Lamoille Jamboree on Saturday Aug. 27 and then host MVU on Aug. 31 at 4:30 and BHS on Sept. 3 at 1pm for JV and 3 for Varsity.

The girls' pre-season scrimmage season kicks off with Woodstock coming to town on Aug. 30 for a 4pm start and then they travel to Essex for the Essex Jamboree on Sept. 3.

DON'T FORGET IF YOU DID NOT ATTEND THE SPORTS INFO NIGHT ON AUG. 18 YOU NEED TO ATTEND TUESDAY AUG 23 AT 7PM IN THE AUDITORIUM. THIS IS FOR STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS.

For the second time in three years the softball team has brought home the hardware from the D III State Championship. After an up and down season full of adversity and big wins, the girls went into the championship game an underdog #6 seed against #1 seed Randolph. The girls beat Enosburg in the semifinal game with 7 run bottom of the 6th rally and seemed to carry that momentum into the 'chip game on Wednesday. After a highly charged and exciting Last Chapel, where many of the awards presenters were indeed prescient and several made bold predictions, the girls got on the road to Poultney...again...and made good on the predictions...what a way to end the school year...to read about the game click the link below...

Uh Oh Here we go....again

For the second time in three years the softball team will be playing for a state championship. The girls had to fight hard against Enosburg on Tuesday, but a bottom of the 6th 7 run rally gave them an 8-7 lead and sealed their spot in the D III finals this weekend.

The game will be played at Poultney at 2pm Saturday June 11. The girls face the number 1 seed Randolph.

Tickets are $7.00 for adults, $4.00 for students and seniors and $20.00 for a family pass (up to 6 people)

The Baseball team ended its season on Friday with a hard fought loss to 2 seed Bellows Falls 6-4. Overall it was a fantastic season with the boys finishing a respectable 10-6 and second in the Mountain Division.

The Track team finished up at the State Meet on Saturday at Green Mountain Union High School. Highlights from Saturday were Kayla henry's second straight D III championship in the pole vault. She set a state meet record with her jump of 8'6". Freshman Hannah Merriam burst onto the track scene taking home two individual championships in the 100m and 200m races. Allison Scarf was a four-event scorer, placing 2^nd in the 100 meter hurdles, 2^nd in the long jump, 6^th in the high jump, and 6^th in the 200 meter dash. Naomi Paige, Carie Wan, and Jade Segreto ran great legs in a strong 4x800 race. The 4x800 quartet returned to the track for the final event, the 4x400 meter relay, finishing in a very respectable (and points-scoring!) 5^th place. Andrea Coles ran a personal best (15.45) in the 100 meters. The girls finished 4th overall.

The boys were led by the 3^rd place finish of the 4 X 400 meter relay of Dylan Ballard, Ben Wan, Danny Stames, and Dylan Baker. Sophomore Dylan Ballard capped of a tremendous season in the javelin with a fifth place finish (125’ 5”). He threw 143’ 1” the previous Saturday at the New England qualifier to place 7^th, narrowly missing qualifying for this prestigious competition. Danny Stames ran a personal best 4:33.33 to place 6^th in the 1500 meter run.

Junior Ian Sudol ran a personal best in the 200 meter (25.75) and threw the javelin (89’ 9”). Dylan Baker ran the 200 meter (26.16), and Ben Wan ran another strong race in the 300 hurdles (49.74). Danny Stames ran a personal best in the 3000m (10:38.45), while easing off in the final laps in anticipation of the soon to follow 4 X 400 meter relay.

The softball team is still playing. After beating 3 seed Windsor on Saturday the girls will host 7seed Enosburg tomorrow at 4:30...They beat Windsor 4-2.

Spring sports are springing...

The baseball and softball teams have gotten off to two totally opposite starts this season with the girls winning their first two games with Vergennes (9-3) and Fairfax (8-4) and the dropping their next two to Lamoille and Richford. The boys dropped their first two games with Enosburg and Fairfax and then beat Winooski 2-1 in 10 innings, Richford 12-6, and then used a walk-off two-run homer by Junior DQ in the bottom of the 7th to beat Lamoille last night 3-2.

The games continue tonight (weather permitting) as the teams host Danville at 4:30. Then we hit the road for games at Lake Region on Thursday and wrap up the week at home on Saturday against Fairfax at 4:00pm.

With Winter behind us--oops wait did I say that?--I mean with Winter sports season behind us, we look forward to the spring teams taking the fields, track and links, but first a little recap of the basketball, hockey, skiing, and indoor track seasons:

After several years of dominance and high numbers of participants in Nordic Skiing, this year was lean. Peoples had one girl and one boy this year on the team. Sophomore A.Coles led the way for the girls, and competed hard all season. Sophomore D. Stames led the way for the boys and skied strong all season long. He logged several top 5 finishes and medaled in 10th place in the boys state classic race, and 11th in the boys state skate race...Stames was also 11th, 1st Honorable Mention on the All-State Nordic Ski Team...

In indoor track it was the same story...A. Scarf was the lone girl and D. Safford was the lone boy. They both competed hard, but it was Scarf who was a one-woman show at states. Scoring enough points to beat entire girls teams, she placed 4th in the long jump, 3rd in the high jump and 2nd in the 55M hurdles. She set new school records in the high jump and the hurdles as well.

In Girls Hoop, the teams did well with the JV improving their skills and increasing their knowledge of the game under first year coach Darcie Jones, and the Varsity finishing 7-13 and losing their first round playoff game to Lake Region. Junior K. Newton was named to the All Mountain League first team, Senior Jill Stein was named to the second team, and Freshman J. Bohannon was named Honorable Mention. The team also earned the sportsmanship award for the league.

In Boys Hoop, both teams also did well with the JV team coming together as a team and playing some very exciting games, and the varsity finishing up 7-13 and hosting Poultney in the first round of the playoff. Winning that game the boys moved on to play rival Hazen at Hazen. The boys lost that game, but had a good season. All-League announcements have not been made yet...

In Boys Hockey the team finished 15-5, got a first round bye and hosted Northfield in the Quarterfinals. They lost 2-1 in OT, but the season was one of the best in recent memory. Junior C. Hinrichs was named first team All Lake Division and Honorable Mention on the All State Team with a 34 goal and 21 assist season. Junior S. Loh was named second team All Lake. Many new kids came out for the team this year and next year the boys should be strong again.

Boys' updates

The Hockey team traveled down to Brattleboro and the Basketball team hopped on over to Lamoille on Friday night. The hockey team came away with the 4-3 win as Sophomore Center J. Thompson netted two goals for the Wolves. The boys play next at home on Saturday vs. the Hilltoppers from St. J. Face off time is 5pm.

The Boys' Basketball team was looking for a little payback after being crushed by 30 points at The Den by the Lancers in the first of two games this season. The game was back and forth all night with the score being tied at 22 at the half and Lamoille being up 29-27 after 3. The game stayed close (31-31), but with 4 minutes left in the 4th, Lamoille started scoring and PA found it hard to fill the hoop. The final score was 44-34, but many of the boys felt good about their effort. They play at Lake Region on Friday 1/14 at 6/7:30

It was a lose-lose situation last night for boys winter sports...First let's get to the hoop action...The boys hosted Lake Region last night at The Den and came away with two L's. The JV game started out with the boys going down 10-1 and after one it was 13-1. The boys then held the JV Rangers scoreless for the first 6 minutes of the second quarter and clawed their way back to make it 20-14 at halftime. The boys fought hard, but the Rangers led the rest of the game and came away with the W. The Varsity game was a different animal all together. the boys jumped out to a 13-3 lead early and led the game until about 4:30 left in the 4th quarter, when Lake Region tied the game at 20. The game then went 22-22, 24-24, and then the Rangers pulled away with two quick layups and a three to go up 31-24. The Rangers added four more and the boys added 4 more and Lake Region came away with the 35-28 win. The boys are now 1-4 on the season and travel to Lamoille on Friday for 6 and 7:30 games.

The boys hockey team, which had been a goal scoring tear for its first 7 games (50 goals), was held scoreless last night at Stowe and suffered their first loss of the season. Stowe won 4-0 and Senior Stowe player Ross Mandigo picked up his 100th career point during the game. The boys look to get back on track as they travel to Brattleboro on Friday for a 3:00pm game with Colonels.

Hope all you PA sports fans had a fun and relaxing Winter break...school is back in session and a lot happened over the break, so let's get right to it...

First off we have to talk Hockey. As we head into the new year the Hockey Team is now 7-0 and on top of the Lake Division. The first day of the break they traveled to Norwich to take on St. Johnsbury in the first round of the Scott Boyce Memorial Tournament. They won the game 6-5 and took their spot in the championship game the next day against host Northfield. They beat Northfield 8-5 for the championship in game that saw senior J.Caldwell score 4 goals.

With the hardware for the Boyce Tourney in hand they returned to Green Mountain Arena on 12/27 to face cross-county rival Stowe. In what would prove to be a fantastically played hockey game for both teams, tied 2-2 going into the 3rd period, the Wolves would pull off the W in dramatic fashion. Senior T. Guy would score the go ahead goal unassisted with about 9 minutes left in the game. Caldwell added an insurance goal about 5 minutes later. While the offense got the goals that solidified the win, the team could not have won without the stingy goal-tending of sophomore L. Caldwell. Caldwell was a beast between the pipes stopping 47 of Stowe's 49 shots on net.

Two nights later on 12/29 the boys had a rematch with Northfield at Green Mountain Arena. The boys jumped out to a 4-0 lead and it was 4-1 after the 1st period. Northfield came out strong in the 2nd, and with 5 minutes left in the 3rd Northfield took the lead 6-5. With the momentum shifted in the Marauders direction, Coach Loh called a timeout and gathered the team. They responded well and scored 3 goals in the next 1:41. It started with the tying goal from junior S. Loh on a 5-3 power play. Senior J. Caldwell then went the length of the ice skating through the entire Northfield team to deliver a blistering wrist shot past the Northfield netminder for the game winner. Loh added the insurance goal and the boys pulled out the gutsy win 8-6.

The boys travel south down RT 100 tonight for a rematch with Stowe. Face-off time is 6:30...Get there early for a seat and dress warm...

Next let's talk hoop. With both the boys and girls starting of winless this year, it was nice to see last week 12/30 and last night 1/3 for them both to get their first wins of the season.

With the Lamoille game--a 61-31 loss--still fresh in their minds, the boys took to the floor against another cross-county rival Stowe on 12/30. The game started off very evenly matched but ended with the boys getting their first victory of the still young season. Sophomore S. Angione poured in 11 hard-earned points, and R. Davis added 9. Angione was named WLVB/Booth Bros. player of the game by radio announcer Brent Curtis. The offense was good, but the real story was seniors N. Jones and C. Mandigo holding Stowe standout J. Scrubb to just 9 points for the game. The boys tip-off with Lake Region tonight at home; game times are 5:30/7pm...

With Stowe canceling their girls season, we looked to add two game to the schedule for the teams. On 12/28 the girls made the trek down to Oxbow for one of those makeup games. Coach Mac sasid the girls played their best game of the season to that point and were extremely competitive for the duration of the game. However, everytime the Lady Wolves would get close, Oxbow would pull away. The game ended 49-40.

Last night the girls got their first win of the season over Craftsbury 44-26. The girls are 12 deep this year and Coach Mac has no problem playing everyone. All the girls contributed in the W, but it was K. Newton who came away with player of the game honors from Curtis. The Ladies travel south tomorrow to take on Twinfield. Game times are 5:30/7pm.

Not much to report on the Nordic Skiing front. The fickle weather has played a huge role in how much actual skiing is happening, but we'll keep you up-to-date as the season progresses...

Basketball updates

Both the boys and girls varsity teamsare off to 0-2 starts. The girls have lost to Northfield and most recently to Lyndon. The boys dropped games to Fairfax and most recently to Twinfield. The boys will try and rebound Tuesday night when they host Lamoille at The Den for 5:30/7 starts. The girls won't play again until 12/30 when they travel to Fairfax to take on the Bullets. for 6/7:30 starts.

The Boys Hockey Team won its third straight game Saturday night 12/18 against the Vikings from Lyndon. Five minutes into the game the score was 3-0 Peoples and the boys never looked back. The first goal of the game was scored by sophomore J. Thompson (LUHS) (2 goals). Junior Defenseman C. Hinrichs added a Hat Trick of his own, senior center J. Caldwell added 2 goals and 3 assists, S. Loh added a goal and an assist, P. Titterton added a goal and an assist, J. Sciortino (LUHS) added a goal, A.Cochran had 2 assists, B. Andres had 2 assists, T. Guy added 2 more assists, and C.Waller also added an assist.

The Boys play next in the Boyce Tournament at Norwich on Wednesday 12/22 at 5:30 vs. St. Johnsbury.

In their second game vs. Milton on 12/15 the boys won 6-1. J.C. had a goal and 4 assists, C.H. had 2 goals, 2 assists, B.A. had a goal and an assist, C. Leikert added a goal, A.C. had a goal, S.L had an assist, and P.T. also added an assist, and L.Caldwell was a beast between the pipes with 25 saves.

The boys' next home game is Monday 12/27 vs. Stowe at 6pm.

WONder woman at UVM indoor track meet

Junior track athlete A.Scarf was a one woman show on Saturday at the indoor track meet at UVM:

She won the 55 hurdles in 9.24, the high jump with a 5' 2" and placed 2nd in the long jump with a 14' 3.5".

Her high jump mark of 5'2"is a new school indoor record.

Boys Hockey

The boys' hockey team jumped all over North Country Saturday and spoiled the Falcons' opening game at the new Jay Peak Ice Haus by winning 8-3. The boys skated out to a 4-1 first period lead and never looked back. The score after two was 6-3, and Sophomore Goalie L.C. and a stingy veteran defense held the Falcons scoreless for the third period, and the boys added two more to make the final tally 8-3. Senior J.C. led all scorers with 4 goals--yes 4 and 2 assists, Junior C.H. had 2 goals and an assist, Junior S.L. had a goal and an assist, senior P.T. had a goal and two assists, and senior T.G. had 2 assists. The boys' home opener is Wednesday 12/15 at 6 pm vs. Milton.

Girls Basketball

The girls opened up their season at Northfield on Saturday losing 38-24. The girls jumped out to a good start, but by halftime Northfield was up 7. To start the third quarter Northfield went on a 7-0 run and that was the difference in the game. The girls fought hard to not let the lead grow, but in the end they stalled on the offensive end and were never able to close the gap. The Girls' home opener is Wednesday at 7 vs. Twinfield.

Winter season under way

Practices started after Thanksgiving break and the teams have been working very hard to get ready for the season.

The girls had a very successful scrimmage on Saturday against Mt. Abe and tip off their regular season on Saturday 12/11 at Northfield and have their first home game on Wednesday 12/15 against Twinfield. The girls are young this year and for the first time in a few years Coach Macallister has a full roster of 12. The JV team has 14 players and is gearing up for their season under first year coach Darcie Jones.

The boys had their first scrimmage last night against Lyndon and looked very good. They played hard but more importantly played together. They are also 12 deep and the boys JV has about 14 guys as well. They tip off the season at Fairfax on Tuesday 12/14 and open at home two nights later 12/16 against Twinfield,

Please note that this year all home games will start at 5:30 for JV and 7:00 for Varsity.

The Boys Hockey team, which appeared on the verge of having 10-11 players this year has grown to a mighty 21 boys. Some have not played competitive hockey before, but Coach Loh says everyone has come in with good attitudes and fantastic work ethics. The team looks to be strong and should be very competitive in the Lake Division this year. They have their first scrimmage at U-32 tonight at 8pm and open up their regular season at North Country and the brand new Jay Peak Ice Haus on Saturday at 4pm. No more trips to Stanstead...They open up at home on 12/15 against Milton at 6pm at Green Mountain Arena.

The Nordic Team is low on numbers as in we only have one High School racer as of now...if you are interested in skiing please stop by my office in the next few days and let me know. The first home meet is Tuesday 12/14.

The Indoor Track Team is also a little low on numbers, so stop by if you are interested in throwing events, high jumping, long jumping, or running...we could use a few more...They open up at UVM on Saturday 12/18 at noon.

#12 - Lucas Fitzgerald, Fr., M, Morrisville, Vt./Peoples Academy

Fitzgerald, currently undeclared, was one of the most exciting players in the NAC as a rookie as he was a threat to make a play whenever the ball was at his feet.
With 10 points on three goals and four assists, Fitzgerald led the Badgers in scoring in 2010 and which tied him for 10th place overall in the NAC. His three assists in conference play were second among all players regardless of class and tops among league rookies.

Boys Soccer Semis...

The Boys' season ended last night in the semi-finals. The boys lost to #6 seed Fairfax in PK's 4-2. The game was probably the best boys' game played on the upperdeck pitch all season. Fairfax dominated possession in the first half, but the boys still managed some very good chances at goal. Neither team could find the back of the net.

In the second half and overtime periods the boys found their form and dominated the play creating chance after chance. Ryan M and Avery C made several runs from the back creating chances for the Wolves. The Fairfax goalie was strong and made several key saves, and several of the PA shots went just wide of the Fairfax net. PA keeper Alex B was also strong and made many key saves as well...

The shootout victory sends Fairfax to the finals to face #1 seed Leland and Grey on Saturday.

The boys finished the season 10-3-3, and while they were disappointed with their season ending before they had hoped, they can be very proud of their efforts and results this season. They really responded like champions in overcoming the adversity and challenges that have come their way in the past year. Under first-year coach Phil Rogers they really grew together had an awesome season. Congratulations boys...

Girls Soccer Update; Team, you know !!!

10.30.10--The girls lost in overtime to Oxbow Saturday 1-0. The game was hard fought with both teams creating several chances on the wet field. The weather was raw and unforgiving, but both teams fought hard and played well. PA lost sweeper Stacy T to a pulled hamstring in the second half, but sophomore Haleigh W did a great job filling her shoes in the back. In the end it was two phenomenal saves made by Kaleigh N the last of which bounced to an Oxbow attacker and found the back of the net one minute into the overtime.

Although they fell short of their goal of winning a third straight championship, the girls should be proud of what they accomplished this year with a very young team. They had a great season. Congratulations girls...

Boys beat Northfield

10.29.10--In what was one of the hardest fought matches of the boys season yesterday, PA came away victorious against the Marauders from Northfield, 2-1. It was 0-0 at the end of the first 40. The boys took about 20 minutes to get going and for that first 20 Northfield looked really good. The Marauders were controlling the midfield and put several shots just wide of the PA goal. The next 20 minutes provided a much more balanced game with both teams getting scoring chances and both teams defending well. About 15 minutes into the second half, the boys struck first. A low corner kick from sophomore Owen F found the left boot of senior Ben A and he chipped it over everyone into the Northfield goal. PA 1, Northfield 0. Northfield would even the score about 8 minutes later. PA failed to clear a corner kick and it bounced right to a Marauder at the edge of the 18 and he blasted it past the PA defense to level the game at 1. With about 12 minutes left to play and a lot people thinking OT, the boys struck again on a corner. This time Owen found the head of Junior Center Middie Ryan D who snapped it into the Northfield net for the game winner.

The boys play Tuesday at 3pm vs. #6 seed BFA Fairfax.

--The Girls had their foot on the gas from kickoff on Wednesday and didn't let up until the half-time whistle sounded. Pouring in 4 goals in the first 40 minutes the girls shutout the Hornets 4-0 and advanced to Quarterfinals. The first goal was scored by sophomore Striker Marissa B. from a cross off the boot of freshman Middie Hannah M. The second goal was scored by junior Middie Sierra N from Stacy T, the third was scored by senior Middie Kay-ler H. (her first goal of her high school career...congrats) again on an assist from Hannah M, and the fourth goal was scored by Katie "TT" S. Keeper Kaleigh N. saw very little action and made 2 saves for the shutout.

Oxbow will be a much tougher opponent on Saturday and should make for a great match. If practice yesterday was any indication, the girls are focused on their goal...see you there...3pm

Soccer regular season ends on a high note; senior days

Both the girls and boys celebrated their senior days this past weekend. the girls on Friday and the boys on Saturday. The girls matched up against D.I North Country in an Non-League game on Friday evening. After Nomes, Kay-ler and Leesh received their flowers and recognition it was down to business. Junior middie Sierra N. scored the first goal of the game off of a perfect cross from freshman middie Hannah M. The second goal of the game was scored by defensive middie Allison S. on a beautiful shot from about 25 yards out. Sophomore striker Marissa B added the third off of a corner kick.

The girls are seeded 3rd in the post season and will play on Wednesday 10/27 vs. Windsor at 3pm.

There are 12 seniors on the boys team and for them this would be their last regular season game against cross-county rival Stowe. According to senior captain Ben A. the Wolves had not beaten the Raiders since his freshman year. It was a beautiful day for soccer and celebrating these seniors. Special thanks for JV Boys hoop coach Thane Griswold for handing out flowers and handshakes for all the seniors. Again, once the recognitions were through it was game on...The game was tense at first. Stowe created most of the chances in the first 10 minutes, but the play evened out and both teams played well and created chances. The best of which was a beautiful run by sophomore middie Owen F. from midfield to 25 yards out. Owen spotted senior Adam D. making a far post run. Owen passed the ball to Adam and he bent it into the far upper corner of Stowe's goal for the only goal of the game. Stowe almost tied it in the second half on a free-kick from 30 yards out. The ball was headed by a Stowe player and was looking like it would score when Alex B. sprung into action and made an incredible save...

With the win on Saturday the boys clinched the #2 spot and will have to wait for the winner of Northfield/Windsor game. The boys will play on Friday 10/29 at 3pm...

Cross-country Invitational

10.9.10--PA...over 400 athletes representing all four divisions in Vermont High School Athletics participated in the annual Peoples Academy Invitational Cross-Country Meet. The day was chilly but bright and the new course designed by Coach Paige was challenging. Previous wet weather left muddy spots thick and deep enough to swallow shoes. Several muddy shoes were delivered to the scoring table and several runners finished the race with one shoe. PAML XC was represented well by a full team and the PA high school team was also in full force. The day, however belonged to two D.I teams. St. Johnsbury and CVU scored many of the trophies. And took first place in boys and girls respectively.

PA races this weekend at the NVAC Mountain Division championships at Harwood. The Middle School races start at 10 with JV and Varsity to follow...

Girls Soccer update

The girls lost a close game last night in the rain at U-32 3-2. U-32 scored first, but then 2 minutes later Katie S. crossed a ball to Sierra N. who volleyed it into the back of the net. U-32 scored two more goals and Alysha J. added a second for the Lady Wolves. The girls play Friday at Lyndon at the Lyndon Town Fields at 4pm.

10.5.10 St. Johnsbury--
In what can only really be described as a defensive battle, the boys played St. J to a 0-0 tie last night at St J. Offensive chances for both teams were hard to come by, but St. Johnsbury probably had the best opportunities of the day. Junior keep Alex B. had an amazing game making many difficult saves during both regulation and OT. The boys still earned 4 index points for the tie, so all wasn't for not. They are now in sole possession of 5th place in the D.III rankings. This was there 2nd 0-0 draw in a row. They play Lyndon at Lyndon on Thursday at 4pm.

The JV team also played to a draw. 2-2 was the final at the JV game.

Boys soccer update

The boys travel to St. J tomorrow to take on a tough Hilltopper squad. Through the season so far the boys are 5-2-1 and tied for 5th in the D.III rankings. They started out the year 4-0. After beating Fairfax, they had 1-0 win at home vs. Spaulding. The goal was a PK by Ben A.

After that was 1-0 loss at Harwood. Then another 1-0 win vs. Montpelier--goal by Harper K.

Homecoming was next and the game was fierce. The teams played to a 0-0 tie after regulation and about 2 minutes into the first OT the Lancers finished a PK to take the win. Touche' Lamoille.

The most recent match was at Thetford. Thetford is a very strong team that was just coming off a 2-1 win at Harwood. The game was even and ended in a 0-0 tie after 100 minutes.

It's been a while since the Thetford game...Let's start with the most recent and work backwards...

St. J was down on Saturday for another Capital Division game. 30 seconds into the game there was handball in the St. J box and Stacy T. buried the PK in the back of the net for the first goal of the game. Less than fifteen minutes later, Katie S. put a great move on a Hilltopper defender and as she was going to goal, the defender tripped her in the box for another PK. Stacy T. buried another to put the girls ahead 2-0. The second half saw the Hilltoppers come on strong, but they only managed one goal Peoples came away with another win. They are now 4-1-2 and 4th in the D.III standings. They play at U-32 on Wednesday.

Before the St. J. game the girls faced tough Capital Division foe Montpelier. The game was an even match and ended that way as well 1-1. Alysha J. got her first goal of the season.

Prior to those two Capital Division matches was homecoming and the cross town rivalry of the Lamoille Lady Lancers...If you missed this game, you missed a great game. Lamoille scored first about 15 minutes into the game. PA struggled to put together solid play, but as the first half wore on they looked stronger and stronger. Finally, with about 2 minutes left, a Stacy T. corner kick was headed home by freshman Michelle Y. for the tying goal. The second half saw Peoples take their first lead of the game on a lefty shot that barely escaped the hands of the Lamoille keeper by another freshman, Hannah M.

Lamoille turned around and about 15 minutes later tied it up.
Less than 2 minutes after the Lamoille goal freshman Katie S. picked up a ball at midfield, beat two Lamoille defenders and was in on the Lamoille keeper. Katie shot it low and hard in the left corner for the winning goal.

The girls went down to Northfield on Sept. 16 and notched a 2-0 shutout. The last game of their rigorous 4 game road trip--they played their first 4 games on the road this year--was at Harwood. Harwood is always tough and this year proved to be no different as they handed the Ladies their first and only loss of the season 2-1.

The boys notched their third win in a row yesterday as they beat BFA Fairfax at Fairfax 2-1.
Goals were scored by sophomore striker DG and senior RM.

The JV posted a 6-0 win over the JV Bullets and junior backup keeper TJB notched the shutout with help from solid D anchored by sophomore DB.

The boys will be tested Friday as they take on Capitol League foe Spaulding at home. It promises to be a stellar matchup of two strong teams. See you there, right?

Girls post first win...

At Thetford on Tuesday the girls posted their first win of the season by outscoring Thetford 3-0. The first goal of the game came when Junior AS scored just 9 seconds into the half. A 35 yard direct free kick goal was added by junior sweeper ST, and the third goal by freshman midfielder HM. All the goals were scored in the first half.

The JV girls also won at Thetford tallying 7 goals to Thetford's 2. Goals were scored by KF, MF (2), JC, CH, AB, and JF.

The girls Varsity team travels to Northfield today.

Welcome back everyone...After a fantastic summer vacation the BLOG is back...The boys and girls soccer teams and the XC team has been in full practice mode for about two and a half weeks now and last night the boys had their first game of the 2010 Fall season (the girls open up Saturday at Stowe at 11am, and XC opens up Saturday as well at the Essex Invitational at 9am).

The boys opened up against Rice at home last night and much to the large crowd's delight came away with a 3-2 victory (see picture above) in double overtime. Rice opened up the scoring in the first half, but with 37 seconds left in the first half, senior RM played a ball over the top to sophomore striker OF and he finished beautifully to knot the game at 1. Half way through the second half OF took a shot on goal that was saved by the Rice keeper, but bounced to the foot of senior striker HK and he shot it past vthe Rice keeper for the go-ahead goal. Ten minutes later Rice evened the score and the teams played to a 2-2 tie after regulation. The first overtime was riddled with chances for both teams, but neither could capitalize. The second overtime was played pretty even until about 3 minutes left when the boys really started pressuring hard. After two corner kicks failed to produce a goal, Rice had a goal kick. The Rice keeper kicked the ball low and hard but right to sophomore striker DG, who had been pestering the Rice defenders all game with his hustle, touch, and tenacity. DG controlled the ball, dribbled into the 18 and fired a shot that was deflected wide by the Rice keeper. OF jumped on the rebound and buried the game winner with 1:33 left in the second OT. The boys play at Hazen Saturday with an 11am start. The boys JV won handily yesterday 12-0.

The upper deck varsity field went through a major face lift this summer with many community members donating resources to the cause. The field has never looked or felt better thanks to an aggressive seeding, fertilizing, mowing, and watering regiment, and with the help of a grant from the Vermont Dairy Council, PA Boosters, Morrisville Youth Soccer, and many other community members we have a brand new Daktronics scoreboard to keep the time and score for the varsity teams for years to come.

The next home game is the 9/17 as the boys take on Spaulding at 4:30.

The boys golf team came in 3rd place yesterday at the State Match at Middlebury. Sophomore I.J. shot the low round for Peoples with a 79.

The Peoples Academy girls’ team took second place overall out of more than 20 teams. With just five girls on the team, and freshman AC unable to compete due to an injury, the team performed extremely well, racking up 78 points behind first place Woodstock Academy’s 98 points. This was the first state championship for the Woodstock girls. Peoples’ girls have now taken first place (5 times) or second place (3 times) in the last eight years!

Leading the pack was senior Chelsea Hostetter with a first in the long jump (16’-9”) which set a new school record; a second in the 100m dash, edged out by only.01 of a second, which was a P.R.; a second in the 200m dash, also a P.R.; and a fifth in the javelin, also a P.R. Sophomore AS took second in the 100m hurdles, second in the high jump, and third in the triple jump. Junior KH took first in the pole vault, matching her previous P.R. height of 8’-0”; third in the 300m hurdles, a P.R., fifth in the 400m dash, a P.R.; and an eighth in the 3000m run. Junior NP took second place in the 800m run, fifth in the 3000m run, and seventh in the 1500m run. Freshman AC helped her fellow teammates and coaches all day, as she has all season.
The Peoples boys’ team, also a small group with 12 athletes, improved its performance over last year by taking eighth overall out of 22 teams, with very strong relay team finishes.
The relay team of KB, KM, NJ, and RM finished second in the 4 x100m and set a new school record of 46.30, besting their own record set earlier this season. The 4x800m relay team, made up of BW, KB, DS, and CC recorded a P.R. and finished fourth. Earning another P.R. and taking sixth place in the 4x400m relay was the relay team of KB, CW, BW, and RM.
In individual events, Junior NJ took fifth in the javelin and competed well in the long jump, achieving a P.R., and in the triple jump. Junior CC took sixth in the 1500m run and competed well in the 3,000m run, earning a P.R. Junior RM also competed in the 100m dash, and the 200m dash, earning P.R.s in both events. Junior KM earned P.R.s in the 100m dash and in the triple jump, and the long jump. Freshman DS earned a P.R. in the 3000m run and competed well in the 1500m run. Freshman CW earned P.R.s in the 200m dash and the 400m dash, and competed well in the 100m dash. Junior JD earned P.R.s in the triple jump and discus. Sophomore KN earned a P.R. in the 1500m run and competed in the triple jump. Freshman DB toughed it out, competing with a taped sprained ankle in the 100m dash, 400m dash, and javelin. Junior BW also competed in the 300m hurdles. Sophomore IS competed well in the 200m dash, pole vault, and javelin.

Baseball and Softball seasons cut short by Oxbow

On Saturday, June 5, the PA softball season ended withg a loss in the Quarterfinals to Oxbow 3-1. The game was a good one with Oxbow scoring first in the first inning. The Olympians never relinquished the lead. The girls had several chances and left many runners on base at the end of the innings. According to the coaches, this is the first time in 11 seasons PA has not made it to at least the semifinals. The girls say goodbye to seniors Devaney Cote, Chelsea Hostetter, Heather Courchaine, and Amber McCullock.

Tuesday June 8, the PA baseball season also came to an end at the hands of Oxbow. The boys played well all season and entered the game on a 14-game winning streak. Oxbow struck first getting out to a 4-2 lead. The boys cut it to 4-3 and then the Olympians' bats caught fire. They scored 6 more runs to end the game at 10-3. This was the first time since 2006 that the baseball team made the semifinals. The boys say goodbye to seniors Lucas Fitzgerald, Ryan Cross, Kasey Small, Colby Putvain, and Geoff Jaquish.

Thanks to some scorching bats and some great pitching and defense, the baseball and softball teams played their way into the quarterfinals yesterday. Both pitchers pitched complete games. Senior L.F. had a two-run homer for the baseball team and Sophomore K.N. also had a two-run homer for the softball team. The boys won 16-1 and the girls 12-0.

The boys play Friday vs. Winooski in a 4:30 matchup of #2 and #7 seeds and the girls play Saturday at 4:30 vs. Oxbow, which is also a matchup of #2 and #7 seeds....

Boys golf wins sectionals

The foul weather yesterday couldn't keep the boys varsity golf team from dominating the Northern D.III Sectional Tournament at Stowe Country Club. Sophomore S.L. was medalist with a blistering 77. He was the only golfer to break into the 70's. PA placed two more in the top 5. Sophomores I.J. and A.B. shot 86 and 90 respectively. The top four PA golfers shot a combined 351 and were the first overall team followed by Stowe with a 389 and Hazen with 401. The State Tournament is next Tuesday at Middlebury.

Softball playdowns tomorrow

In their bid to defend their 2009 D.III Championship, the softball team will host #15 seed Twin Valley tomorrow at 4:30 in the first round of the playoffs. The girls secured the #2 seed with a shining 15-1 record with their only loss coming at the hands of Mountain League rival BFA Fairfax. A win tommorow and the girls will host either #7 Oxbow or #10 Lake Region on Saturday at 3pm.

After the long weekend, the D.III baseball pairing are out and we have a playdown game scheduled for today with Mountain League foe Richford. The boys secured the # 2 seed with a stellar 14-2 record and a second consecutive Mountain League Championship. A win today and we host the quarterfinals on Friday against either #7 Winooski or #10 Stowe.

Yesterday was the freshman/sophomore meet at U-32 and the PA team shined once again. Aside from the many podium trips from the entire team (updates later), congratulations to sophomore AS on garnering the Female Track Athlete of the Meet award. AS placed either 1st or 2nd in all the events she competed in.

The home meet on Saturday May was a fine success. The rain held of for most of the day and PA competed against Harwood and Oxbow.

Updates on podiums, PR's, and points to come. Ditto for the Harwood Invitational on Tuesday May 18.

Catching up with the Track team...man are they fast...

The Peoples Academy track team competed in the Burlington Invitational Friday and Saturday, May 7th and 8th. With over 800 athletes representing mostly division I and II schools competing, PA placed 15th overall, and was the top division III school at the meet. PA athletes took the podium 4 times, others achieved personal best performances, and everyone gained valuable experience competing in a big meet.

Sophomore AS took 3rd in the girls long jump, tied for 4th in the high jump, and placed 6th in the 100m hurdles. The boys 4 X 100 team of KB, KM, DB, and RM took 5th place in a school record time of 48.01.

Personal best performances were turned in by KH in the girls pole vault, NJ in the boys javelin throw and triple jump, and AS in both the girls long and triple jumps. On the track NJ, DB, RM, and KM all set personal bests in the boys 100 dash, while RM did so in the boys 200 dash, and NP in both the girls 800 and 1500 meter runs.

It was a team effort that also produced seasonal best times in both the boys 4 X 400 relay (RM, NJ, DS, CC) and the boys 4 X 800 relay (CC, BW, CW, KB).

Catching up with the Baseball/Softball teams

Well it has been a long long time without a post, so I will do my best to get you all updated as we head into the last week and a half of the spring regular season. The spring weather has been fickle and we have had to deal with two crazy snowstorms and a bit of wet weather. Two batting cages were heavily damaged by heavy wet snow, but thanks to long-time PA Athletics supporter Dale Allen the baseball cage is back in action and the softball cage is on it's way to being fully functional.

As far as results and highlights, I'll lead off with baseball...

The boys are playing extremely well under new/old coach Bob Jones and assistants Chris Davis and Barry Small. The boys are 9-2 right now and sit in 5th place in the D.III standings. They are on top of the Mountain Division and with key league victories over BFA Fairfax and Lake Region, they are undefeated in League play. 4 of their last five games will be league games with Enosburg (home), Hazen, Stowe, and Danville (home/senior day). After going 2-2 to start the season the boys are on a 7 game winning streak. Losses came at the hands of Mountain League rival BFA Fairfax in a non-league game 3-5 and D.II Harwood, who hammered the boys for 18 runs in a six inning contest that ended 18-3 (15 run rule).

Since the drubbing by Harwood, it has been 7 straight for the boys including a bottom-of-the-seventh comeback at Winooski, 2 huge wins (16-5, 13-0) against Lake Region, a 15-4 demolition of Hazen, and a 5-0 shutout at Danville. While the pitching and defense have been strong for the Wolves (2 shutouts and a total of 20 runs allowed in the last 7 games), the bats have been on fire. In their last 7 wins the boys have driven in 67 runs. All the bats have contributed, and the pitching has been mostly by committee. Only junior TG and senior LF have pitched complete games: a 6-5 win at Fairfax and a 13-0 shutout at Lake Region for TG and a 5-0 shutout at Danville for LF. With contributions from seniors KS, LF and CP, junior TG, sophomores EC, JH, RD and DQ, the Wolves aces have been getting it done.

The defending D.III champs are back at it again or should I say "Uh Oh here they go..." With everyone back from the 2009 team one year older and one year wiser and some key senior additions and some young Wolf pups, the girls are perfectly poised to make another run to the finals. Through 11 games they are 10-1 with their only loss coming in a Mountain League game at league rival and 2009 D.III runner-up Fairfax 1-2.

Sophomore ace JS has picked up where she left off last year and is throwing harder than ever, and Junior ace JS (same initials, different pitchers) has been throwing hard and having fun. Between the two pitchers and the veteran defense, the girls have given up just 31 runs in 11 games while driving in 95 of their own.

They are 1-1 in Mountain League play and look to make it 2-1 when they face Enosburg at home tomorrow. Their last league win was yesterday over Lake Region 10-3. The girls are currently 2nd in the D.III standings.

BFA St. Albans track meet update from Coach Guillot...

What a great meet, nice new track,wonderful weather, and successful performances. I think it was the first meet held on their new surface. On the girls side, in the 100m Dash H.W. and A.C. finished 13th and 23rd repectfully (out of 28) with very good times. They were both the fastest Div.III athletes in that event. They were on the 2nd place Hybrid 4x100m relay team. H.W. also had two 10th place finishes in the long jump and high jump.

On the boys side, In the 100m Dash, K.M. was 6th, R.M. 9th, N.J. 11th, I.S. 15th out of 27 runners. In the 200m Dash, R.M. was 4th and K.M. was 8th. In the 800m run, C.C was 3rd, J.D. was 8th, and K.N.was 11th. In the 1500m run Collin was 5th, and Ben was 10th. The 4x100m relay team (R.M. , K.M., B.W, N.J.) took 1st place. The 4x800m relay team(C.C., J.D., B.W., K.N.) took 2nd place. Long jump saw K.M. take 2nd place, and in Javelin, N.J. and I.S. took 8th and 9th (out of 18) respectfully.

These are excellent results in light of the fact it was our first meet of the season, the first high school meet for many, and we were up against mostly D-I and D-II schools and only 1/2 of our team participated (vacation week). I know I speak for the other coaches when I say we are very impressed with the cooperation and hard work our athletes have put in these first 6 weeks of the season. Our next meet of the season is april 29th at U-32 (3:30), followed by our Home meet on May 4th (3:30). We will need about 25 to 30 volunteers for our home meet (may 4th). No experience neccessary (come to the finish line and let me know at 3:00 that day).

Spring sports spring today

While the Baseball, Softball, Track, and Golf teams have been practicing for the last few weeks both inside and out, the season really jumps off today with the Softball team heading to Essex for a scrimmage. The girls are both defending Mountain Division Champs and D. III State Champs, and are looking to defend those titles. The Ladies have everyone back from that team last year and a few new girls too.

The boys are also defending Mountain Division Champs and with new/old coach Bob Jones at the helm look to make a run deep into the post season. Their scrimmage on Saturday at CVU will be their first contest of the year.

The golf team hit Copley for some practice and for the first time in a while have 3 girls playing which means scoring as a team that will qualify for states. There are 10 boys on the team this year and Coach Maynard is looking forward to some competitive golf this season.

The track team has been training hard thanks to the coaches Guillot, Paige, Henry, and Scarf. The girls are looking to repeat as D.III champs this year and have a strong enough team to do it. The boys look to improve and have added a few boys who could make the difference. They kick off their season on April 20 at BFA St. Albans.

Winter season wrap up

The winter sports season ended yesterday at the conclusion of the nordic classic state race at Prospect Touring Center in Woodford, Vermont. The PA teams faired well with the boys coming in 9th overall (skate and classic combined) and the girls coming in 6th overall.
The first day of events, the skate races, were cohosted by PA and North Country and were held at the beautiful Craftsbury Outdoor Center. The Center was alive with skiers from all over the state, and the weather was great for skating. A huge thanks to all the volunteers, Mike Kiser (NC A.D.) and to Judy Geer and Dick Dreissengacker and their staff for helping to create a welcoming and spirited atmosphere at Craftsbury.

A week ago today the boys basketball team played their final game of the season and lost to a tough Oxbow tea in the playdowns by 5. The game was at a packed Carter Gymnasium at Johnson State College. The boys played hard, but were never able to rebound from the third quarter run that Oxbow made to start the second half. Check back for pictures and stats from the game.

It was indeed a long winter season: the boys ski team is young and will be back next year with a fresh look, while the girls team graduates SD, DB, KW, and looks to rebuild for next year...anyone interested see me...

The girls basketball team graduates 4 seniors and will welcome in a large freshman class next year, while the boys team graduates 5 seniors and also welcomes a big group of freshman to the program next year.

The indoor track team had a great season and looks to build on their success this year. They will also be looking to add to the team...interested athletes should see me.

The boys hockey team, while it didn't show in the wins column, had a tremendously successful season. They battled through a ton of adversity brought on mostly by injury and lack of numbers, but their resiliency and work ethic carried them through a long and grueling 20 game season. Also looking to grow; any skaters out there should get in touch with me.

Congrats all on a great season...we had record successes in regards to eligibility and our reputation as a school that takes pride in our sportsmanship continues to grow...Again, you inspired many and made many proud...

Lady Wolves finish season on a high note

The Lady Wolves lost to Montpelier in the first round of the playoffs last week. It was the "second season" for the Ladies as they looked to start the playoffs playing their best basketball of the season.

They did just that: Down only 8 at the half, the Ladies put the Solons on their heels and made a real game of it. They finished strong but missed some layups and shot barely 50% from the line to finish just 5 behind the #3 team in D.III Girls hoop.

Boys to host Olympians

No, not those Olympians...

The Oxbow Olympians...will be the Wolves guests on Wednesday, February 24 at 7pm at Johnson State College for a first round playoff game. Oxbow is 6-12 and the 9th seed. The Wolves shootaround is at 6pm with the Olympians to follow at 6:15. Doors will open to the public at 6:30. Carter Gymnasium at JSC only seats around 350, so don't be late.

Boys take care of home court

The boys secured an 8th seed and a home playdown game last night with a win over BFA Fairfax 50-44. The gym was packed with fans from both schools and the atmosphere was electric for senior night. The boys jumped all over the Bullets getting out to an early 21-6 lead. Senior guard L.F. was a one-man fast break tallying 15 first half points on an array of layups, bankshots and one REALLY deep three. Fairfax stormed back and the boys only led by 4 at half. Both teams started slow in the third and, eventually through traps and PA turnovers and three 3's by senior Bullet J.W., tied the game at 41. Senior forward K.S. hit four straight free-throws to put the Wolves up by 4. Both teams were tight on the defensive end and with every stop, the decibels inside the gym grew to the loudest of the season. The boys did not allow a single field goal in the 4th quarter; All 3 of Fairfax's points came from the free throw line. With the boys up 48-44 with 45 seconds left, L.F. scored on an inbounds play that put the Wolves up 6. That's how it would stay, and as the buzzer sounded, the fans went wild.

The boys will host either Oxbow or Enosburg on Wednesday night at 7pm at Johnson State College. Price for admission will be $5 for adults, $4 for students/senior citizens, and for larger families a family pass will be $20.

The JV game was also a great game. A see-saw battle most of the game was a two point lead for the Bullets with under 15 seconds to play. T.B. had a chance to tie but missed the front end of a one and one, but S.M. got the rebound and with 8 seconds left called time out. The boys got a look going to the hoop, but it it didn't go down and the Bullets escaped with the win.

Boys hoop update

Last week was a bit of a roller-coaster for the boys as they lost one and won one. Wednesday, Feb 10, they travelled to Hazen to take on the Wildcats (16-2). The boys dug a deep hole they were never able to get out of. At halftime the score was 34-5 in favor of Hazen. The boys came out ready for a scrap for the third quarter and forced 5 straight Hazen turnovers, but unfortunatley were unable to score on any of them. Hazen went to their bench and the boys were able to make a little run, but it was never really close and the final score was 53-33.
The JV boys lost a much closer game. The score was tied with 2 minutes left in the first half, when Hazen went on an 8-0 run to close the half. That run would be the difference. The boys would cut the lead, but the JV Wildcats always had an answer.

Friday night was the complete opposite. The JV boys set the tone with a tough hard nosed win against LSSU rival Stowe.

The Stowe Varsity had just come off of a huge win vs. Enosburg and looked to make it a long night for the Wolves. The Raiders jumped out to an early 12-4 lead, but the boys dug in, got some stops on defense and took it to the Raiders, holding them to just 8 points over the last 12 minutes of the half, while putting up 36 of their own. Senior L.F. made his return to the lineup and in his first two minutes dished out 4 assists. The score was 40-20 at half with sophomore guard R.D. hitting a buzzer beating 3 to give the Wolves the 20 point lead. The second half was sloppy by both teams. The two teams scored only 17 points each for a final score of 57-37. L.F. led the boys with 14 points and R.D. added 12 and K.S. added 10. Sophomore E.W. played inspired basketball and while he only scored 4 points, led the team in the rebounds.

The boys play Northfield Wednesday at 7pm at Northfield (varsity only).

Lady Wolves update

The Lady Wolves hoop team played their last regular season game Thursday, Feb 11 against the visiting Rockets from Richford. It was senior night and all four seniors were honored with flowers and recognized for their inspiring effort and determination during their high school hoop careers. Sophomore teammate K.N. had some extremely kind words for them as well.

In the end the Ladies were able to pull off the victory by 3 points, 38-35 and solidify themselves as the 14th seed in the upcoming post-season tourney. Pairings come out later today, but it looks as if 3rd seed Montpelier will be the next test for the Ladies as they try and make their post-season run. Check back here later for the time and date of the playdown game.

AS wins State Championship

Sophomore indoor track participant A.S. won the Individual High Jump State Championship at Norwich on Feb. 6. She jumped 5'0" and also took 3rd in the 55m hurdles and 4th in the long jump. She scored all of PA's 21 points at the meet. She was a voted Wolf of the Week last week. Can you say WOW?

Paying it forward

Organized in 2000 the Lamoille Area Cancer Network (LACN) has donated almost $1,000,000.00 toward cancer patient support in Lamoille County. Pictured above are the captains of the PA Basketball teams presenting a check to Cindy Lowell and Peg Demars of LACN. Their fundraising raised $487.00 and inspired the students to start planning for more philanthropic events in the future. GO WOLVES.

Girls Hockey; Girls Hockey? YES Girls Hockey

Last night the Stowe Girls Hockey Team took on the Montpelier Solons, the number 2 team in D. II Girls Hockey. Some of you maybe wondering why I would write about the Stowe Girls Hockey Team, and some of you may know why.

4 of the 12 Lady Raiders are girls from PA: Senior Defensive player SM, Senior Goalie MG, Junior Forward KH, and Sophomore Forward ST. All contributed in the win against the stacked Solons. The game ended 5-3. MG made some great saves, KH had a goal, ST had an assist, and SM had probably the best goal of the game: The puck was loose in front of the Solons net and she skated through, fell to her knees and as she was sliding through the middle, shot the puck low past the Solons netminder from her knees. The crowd went wild.

If you haven't been to a game, Jackson Arena is a great old-fashioned "outdoor" rink where the announcer keeps the cold air filled with classic rock tunes in between whistles and Mike Manning (SHS Alumni) makes some of the best ice in the county, but more than that, the Lady Raiders play inspiring hockey that is incredibly fun to watch. Next Saturday is their last home game and senior night. Come on out and support the Ladies as they try and secure a high seed for the playoffs. Wear something VERY warm. Wolves v. Rangers Friday night

Highlights were hard to come by Friday night as the undefeated Lake Region Rangers came to town for a game with the Boys' hoop team. Three years ago the boys team was able to defeat the then number 1 and undefeated Winooski Spartans. At practice Friday the boys talked about that 2007 win and were inspired, but needless to say history did not repeat itself. Perhaps coach said it best: "Sometimes you just get beat by a better team." The Rangers were hard to stop as they put up 70 points on the boys from an array of deep three pointers and transition layups. The Rangers' pressure defense held the boys to just 33 points.

On the other hand, the JV game was very close and very exciting. The boys fought hard but were unable to overcome the Rangers and lost by 6.

The boys travel to Hazen Wednesday night and hope to bounce back and avenge the double OT loss to the Wildcats last month.

Hoops vs. Cancer / Giving Back

During the entire month of January, basketball players, coaches, and officials across the country showed their support for cancer research and cancer patient support by wearing pink. Officials used pink whistles, coaches wore pink shirts, pink ties, and hoop shoes, and players wore special pink uniforms, pink shoelaces, pink warmups, pink wristbands (you get the picture).

At Peoples our varsity basketball teams wore pink. The girls came out on Saturday and, more recently, Tuesday with high pink socks and pink headbands. On Monday the boys wore pink shooting shirts and pink laces in their high tops. To really show our support, we went a step further and decided to give patrons on Monday and Tuesday, the choice of where there entrance fee could go. It could go to the school as usual, or it could go to raise money for the Lamoille Area Cancer Network (LACN). LACN is a non-profit network that assists families in Lamoille County who are battling cancer. Because this is a sickness that affects so many, generousity was extremely high and we were able to raise $432.00 from the ticket sales. The Stein Family, who won the 50/50 raffle Tuesday night, donated the $55.00 from the raffle back to the benefit to give us a grand total of $487.00 to donate to LACN.
Thanks to all who attended and donated.

Basketball Updates

The boys went 1-1 last night at Enosburg. The JV team came away with the win 47-42. The varsity lost 50-60. It was another case of the boys coming up one quarter short. The Wolves were outscored 20-7 in the second quarter. The boys were leading after the first quarter and played well enough to cut the lead to 6 in the fourth, but couldn't get any closer. The boys were led by L. F. in scoring with 14.

On Tuesday the Lady Woves took the court against D. III rival Fairfax. The Ladies have had the Bullets number in both soccer and softball, but it was the Bullets that came out strong on Tuesday and took two from the Ladies. The JV played hard, and it was a very close game. Fairfax led by just two with a little less than two minutes to go. The JV Ladies fought hard but were never able to get any closer and Fairfax won 29-22. O.P. had 11 in the loss. The varsity team also played hard, but was never able to beat the 1-3-1 trapping defense that Fairfax played all night. Fairfax won 25-43 and E. N. and K. N. led the Lady Wolves with 6 points each.

On Monday, the boys put together 4 solid quarters and came away with the 58-49 win over Northfield. The game got a little tighter in the fourth with Northfield cutting the lead to 6, but the boys were able to hold off the late surging Marauders for their fifth win of the season. E.W. and R.D. led the Wolves in scoring with 13 points each. Plagued by injuries Northfield was only able to field a varsity team, so no JV score to report.

Spirits are high on the bus as we drive home from a 41 point victory at Richford. Up 33-16 at half, the boys finally put together 4 good quarters and came away with the 81-40 win. R. Davis was a stat sheet stuffer with 24 points, 7 boards, and 3 assists. C. Weglarz and T. Griswold had 10 points each and K. Mandigo had 9. The Wolves had season highs in points with 81 and assists with 18. The team also pulled down 34 boards.

The JV boys also came away with the W, 49-39. Sophomore S. Mandigo paced the JV with 23 pts.

The boys tip-off with Northfield at home on Monday 2/1 for a varsity game only at 7pm.

Yes, golf season is right around the corner, but I want to talk about a differnt kind of LINK...to your right there are a few links that will take you to permission slips, schedules, and more. One link in particular that I think many will find interesting and insightful is the "High School Today" link. High School Today is the publication of the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS).

The NFHS "has led the development of education-based interscholastic sports and activities that help students succeed in their lives. We set directions for the future by building awareness and support, improving the participation experience, establishing consistent standards and rules for competition, and helping those who oversee high school sports and activities. The NFHS publishes playing rules in 16 sports for boys and girls competition and administers fine arts programs in speech, theater, debate and music. It provides a variety of program initiatives that reach the 18,500 high schools and over 11 million students involved in athletic and activity programs" (source: NFHS.org).

The website and magazine are resources for anyone interested in coaching, current coaches, student-athletes, parents of student-athletes, and administrators. The state of Vermont requires that all varsity coaches take at least two of the classes they offer before they finish their first year of coaching in the state (Fundamentals of Coaching and Sports First Aid).

There you will find articles about the current state of Co-curricular activities around the country. With the boys hockey team facing off with Middlebury at home and the boys basketball team tipping off against Winooski at home, it was a busy night for the Wolves Wednesday.

The Varsity Boys Hoop team lost to the Spartans 44-54. The boys could not overcome a 4 pt. second quarter that put them down 17-31 at halftime. The boys cut the Spartans lead to 4 with just about 3 minutes left but were unable to get any closer. K. Small led the Wolves in scoring with 16 and R. Davis added 14 for the now 3-9 Wolves. The boys travel to Richford for a 7pm game on Friday night.

On the ice it was an exciting game. After honoring the seniors (N.Lamphere-Allaire and W. Thompson) at the final home game of the season, the boys got off to a slow start. After two periods the Tigers were up 4-0. The third started off with both teams playing well and neither team able to score, but then with about 7 minutes left in the game, C. Hinrichs went on another one of his scoring runs (earlier this season he scored 5 goals in a 10-5 loss to Milton), and in about 4 minutes had tallied 4 goals to tie the game. The game was tied after 3 periods and went to a sudden death overtime period, where neither team could muster a goal. The game ended in a 4-4 tie. It was the first tie for the Wolves, who are now 2-13-1 for the season. The boys skate down to Woodstock on Saturday for a 7:30 face-off.

Girls Basketball update

1.26.10: The girls hoop teams came home from Danville last night with two additional L's on their records. A bright spot in the Varsity's 30-39 loss, were D. Cote's 18 points. The Lady Wolves are now 4-11. The JV Ladies lost 15-25.

The Ladies are home this Saturday 1.30.10 vs Winooski. JV tips off at 1pm with the Varsity to follow at 2:30

Indoor Track update

1.23.10: At the indoor track meet at UVM, sophomore A. Scarf came in first place in the high jump, won the long jump with a personal record of 16 feet (PA school record is 16'4" held by Lydia Bickford), and took second in the hurdles.

ATTENTION: Spring sports schedules are out and online now. Just hit the "PA Spring Sports Calender" link on the PA Athletics home page and you will find a mix-in schedule like the current winter schedule, where you can view all the upcoming softball, baseball, golf, and track events for spring 2010. The mix-in calender offers a lot of cool features.

My favorites are the email and text alert features.

Say you're a parent or a fan of PA Softball (I know, who isn't, right?), all you have to do is check all the softball games in the mix-in calender and then go to the top of the calender page and select the "add to my calender" feature, or the "remind me by email" feature, or hit the drop down menu of "other event actions" and choose one of the selections. I like the "remind me by text message" feature. Either way, if you have a computer or cell phone, you can have the calender right at your fingertips at all times.
