Softball poised for another run...

The Softball team is a healthy 5-1 to start the season with their only loss coming at the hands of a very talented BFA Fairfax team 10-1 at the home opener. Other than that loss the girls have beaten Enosburg 10-6, D.II powerhouse Lyndon 7-4, Lake Region 10-9 (in a nailbiter that saw L.R. almost tie it up in the 7th), and Stowe in a doubleheader 20-6 and 19-5. The girls are led by Senior pitcher Jamie Strek and a senior-heavy infield of Kaleigh Newton at SS, Natalie Hostetter at 2nd, and Olivia Pierce at 1st. Freshman Sabrina Lacasse is holding it down at 3rd and Junior Marissa Benson is playing LF while Freshman Megan LaMare has been starting in RF. Devon Buker has been starting in CF. 

The girls travel to Danville Tuesday, May 1 to take on the Indians at 4:30.

Baseball off to a hot start

After beating perennial D. III powerhouse BFA Fairfax yesterday 5-2, the Baseball team is now 5-0 and on top of the D. III standings. The boys have also beaten Enosburg 9-1, Williamstown 7-1, U-32 11-1, and Lake Region 15-0. Senior pitchers Ryan Davis and Eric Cross have hurled the Wolves to the top spot backed up by a solid defense led by Senior SS Joe Hostetter. Sophomore Catcher Alex Duca has caught some great games and is currently second on the team with a .450 batting average. Senior first baseman Mike Jaquish is first, hitting a stellar .500.

The boys trailed for the first time this season, when after the first inning it was BFA 2, PA 0. They were able to rally behind some great base running and hitting. They got out of a jam in the top of the 6th when Hostetter nabbed a nasty chopper up the middle and, on the run,  threw out the Fairfax hitter. Senior third baseman Avery Cochran then caught a foul fly ball that had him twisting and contorting as the wind blew the ball around over his head. The third out of the 6th looked like sure double for the Fairfax hitter, who was thrown out by Senior center fielder Dylan Quad who made a spot on throw from center to Hostetter at second for the tag out. That gave the Wolves the momentum they needed to finish the Bullets out. Ryan Davis pitched a complete game for the win.

The boys travel to Danville Tuesday, May 1 to take on the Indians at 4:30.

Baseball and Softball season openers

The Baseball and Softball teams opened up their regular seasons with wins at Enosburg yesterday. The Softball team pulled out a come-from-behind victory and won 10-6.  Senior Jamie Strek’s three-run double highlighted a six-run seventh inning that sent the Lady Wolves to the win.

The Baseball team dominated the Hornets and the pitching combo of Cross, Hostetter, and Davis coupled with a stingy defense allowed only 1 run. They beat the Hornets 9-1. Sophomore Shade Ward went 2-for-3 with a double and sophomore catcher Alex Duca had an RBI double as Peoples opened its season with the win.

The next game for Softball is Saturday as they take on Fairfax at 4pm. The JV BB team opens up at home on Saturday as well as they take on Richford in a doubleheader starting at 11am.

Over break the BB/SB teams go back-to-back on 4/17 and 4/18. On 4/17 the SB takes on perennial D 2 powerhouse Lyndon and the BB team takes on Williamstown. Both games start at 4:30.
On 4/18 the teams take on U-32 at 4:30 as well.

It's back...

That's right...the PA Athletics blog is back. After a very long hiatus that has seen the girls and boys win soccer state championships and the winter season teams and individuals do extremely well, the spring season kicks off this Saturday with the Softball Team as they take on Fairfax at Home for a 4pm start. The JV Baseball Team will also be in action as they host Richford in a double-header that will start at 11am.

In an effort to keep students, parents, and the community up to date, the Blog will once again become the PA Athletics "Home" page.

Girls scrimmage canceled for Thursday Sept. 1

Due to the damage done to the southern part of the state by Tropical Storm Irene, Woodstock will NOT be making the trip up to PA to scrimmage the girls on Thursday. The girls first and only scrimmage will be Saturday at the Essex Jamboree.

Team hike

The day before Tropical Storm Irene slammed into the Green Mountains, the girls soccer team took full advantage of the calm before the storm by organizing a team hike up Mt. Elmore on Saturday. Great fun was had by all as you can see in the pictures. The girls host Woodstock on Thursday Sept. 1 for 4pm scrimmages.

JV games are on the lower fields and the varsity will be played on the upper fields.

A small-sided possession game

Thanks to Morrisville Soccer Club and PA Booster's Grand Pooba, Tom Stames, the boys soccer program kicked off pre-season under the lights at 12:01 am this morning. About 2/3 of the projected amount of boys showed up and coach Rogers ran them through some team building fitness drills and some small sided possession games...Pre-season starts for everyone else later today at more reasonable afternoon starting times...The boys will have three pre-season scrimmage opportunities this year. All three will be home or close to home. They start at the Lamoille Jamboree on Saturday Aug. 27 and then host MVU on Aug. 31 at 4:30 and BHS on Sept. 3 at 1pm for JV and 3 for Varsity.

The girls' pre-season scrimmage season kicks off with Woodstock coming to town on Aug. 30 for a 4pm start and then they travel to Essex for the Essex Jamboree on Sept. 3.

DON'T FORGET IF YOU DID NOT ATTEND THE SPORTS INFO NIGHT ON AUG. 18 YOU NEED TO ATTEND TUESDAY AUG 23 AT 7PM IN THE AUDITORIUM. THIS IS FOR STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS.

UH-OH...HERE WE WENT AND WON ANOTHER

For the second time in three years the softball team has brought home the hardware from the D III State Championship. After an up and down season full of adversity and big wins, the girls went into the championship game an underdog #6 seed against #1 seed Randolph. The girls beat Enosburg in the semifinal game with 7 run bottom of the 6th rally and seemed to carry that momentum into the 'chip game on Wednesday. After a highly charged and exciting Last Chapel, where many of the awards presenters were indeed prescient and several made bold predictions, the girls got on the road to Poultney...again...and made good on the predictions...what a way to end the school year...to read about the game click the link below...

Uh Oh Here we go....again

For the second time in three years the softball team will be playing for a state championship. The girls had to fight hard against Enosburg on Tuesday, but a bottom of the 6th 7 run rally gave them an 8-7 lead and sealed their spot in the D III finals this weekend.

The game will be played at Poultney at 2pm Saturday June 11. The girls face the number 1 seed Randolph.

Tickets are $7.00 for adults, $4.00 for students and seniors and $20.00 for a family pass (up to 6 people)

Congratulations Spring Sports Teams

The Baseball team ended its season on Friday with a hard fought loss to 2 seed Bellows Falls 6-4. Overall it was a fantastic season with the boys finishing a respectable 10-6 and second in the Mountain Division.

The Track team finished up at the State Meet on Saturday at Green Mountain Union High School. Highlights from Saturday were Kayla henry's second straight D III championship in the pole vault. She set a state meet record with her jump of 8'6". Freshman Hannah Merriam burst onto the track scene taking home two individual championships in the 100m and 200m races. Allison Scarf was a four-event scorer, placing 2^nd in the 100 meter hurdles, 2^nd in the long jump, 6^th in the high jump, and 6^th in the 200 meter dash. Naomi Paige, Carie Wan, and Jade Segreto ran great legs in a strong 4x800 race. The 4x800 quartet returned to the track for the final event, the 4x400 meter relay, finishing in a very respectable (and points-scoring!) 5^th place.  Andrea Coles ran a personal best (15.45) in the 100 meters. The girls finished 4th overall.

The boys were led by the 3^rd place finish of the 4 X 400 meter relay of Dylan Ballard, Ben Wan, Danny Stames, and Dylan Baker.  Sophomore Dylan Ballard capped of a tremendous season in the javelin with a fifth place finish (125’ 5”).  He threw 143’ 1” the previous Saturday at the New England qualifier to place 7^th, narrowly missing qualifying for this prestigious competition. Danny Stames ran a personal best 4:33.33 to place 6^th in the 1500 meter run. 

Junior Ian Sudol ran a personal best in the 200 meter (25.75) and threw the javelin (89’ 9”).  Dylan Baker ran the 200 meter (26.16), and Ben Wan ran another strong race in the 300 hurdles (49.74).  Danny Stames ran a personal best in the 3000m (10:38.45), while easing off in the final laps in anticipation of the soon to follow 4 X 400 meter relay.

The softball team is still playing. After beating 3 seed Windsor on Saturday the girls will host 7seed Enosburg tomorrow at 4:30...They beat Windsor 4-2.

Spring sports are springing...

The baseball and softball teams have gotten off to two totally opposite starts this season with the girls winning their first two games with Vergennes (9-3) and Fairfax (8-4) and the dropping their next two to Lamoille and Richford. The boys dropped their first two games with Enosburg and Fairfax and then beat Winooski 2-1 in 10 innings, Richford 12-6, and then used a walk-off two-run homer by Junior DQ in the bottom of the 7th to beat Lamoille last night 3-2.

The games continue tonight (weather permitting) as the teams host Danville at 4:30. Then we hit the road for games at Lake Region on Thursday and wrap up the week at home on Saturday against Fairfax at 4:00pm.

It was a loooooooong winter...

With Winter behind us--oops wait did I say that?--I mean with Winter sports season behind us, we look forward to the spring teams taking the fields, track and links, but first a little recap of the basketball, hockey, skiing, and indoor track seasons:

After several years of dominance and high numbers of participants in Nordic Skiing, this year was lean. Peoples had one girl and one boy this year on the team. Sophomore A.Coles led the way for the girls, and competed hard all season. Sophomore D. Stames led the way for the boys and skied strong all season long. He logged several top 5 finishes and medaled in 10th place in the boys state classic race, and 11th in the boys state skate race...Stames was also 11th, 1st Honorable Mention on the All-State Nordic Ski Team...

In indoor track it was the same story...A. Scarf was the lone girl and D. Safford was the lone boy. They both competed hard, but it was Scarf who was a one-woman show at states. Scoring enough points to beat  entire girls teams, she placed 4th in the long jump, 3rd in the high jump and 2nd in the 55M hurdles. She set new school records in the high jump and the hurdles as well.

In Girls Hoop, the teams did well with the JV improving their skills and increasing their knowledge of the game under first year coach Darcie Jones, and the Varsity finishing 7-13 and losing their first round playoff game to Lake Region. Junior K. Newton was named to the All Mountain League first team, Senior Jill Stein was named to the second team, and Freshman J. Bohannon was named Honorable Mention. The team also earned the sportsmanship award for the league.

In Boys Hoop, both teams also did well with the JV team coming together as a team and playing some very exciting games, and the varsity finishing up 7-13 and hosting Poultney in the first round of the playoff. Winning that game the boys moved on to play rival Hazen at Hazen. The boys lost that game, but had a good season. All-League announcements have not been made yet...

In Boys Hockey the team finished 15-5, got a first round bye and hosted Northfield in the Quarterfinals. They lost 2-1 in OT, but the season was one of the best in recent memory. Junior C. Hinrichs was named first team All Lake Division and Honorable Mention on the All State Team with a 34 goal and 21 assist season. Junior S. Loh was named second team All Lake. Many new kids came out for the team this year and next year the boys should be strong again.
